The Renovation Support Project aims to improve the living conditions of low-income families and individuals in Shanghai. It is an important part of Habitat China’s commitment to fostering a caring society through convening volunteers, businesses and other organizations that are passionate about improving housing and increasing community spirit. With the help of volunteers who have technical experience (engineering, construction and design background), Habitat will identify what the housing issues are and plan how to solve the problems. This project reduces the economic and mental pressure for low-income families with urgent housing needs, so they can live with pride and dignity.

The Gu family, two parents with one daughter, lives in a 20 square meters apartment with no living room. A board separates the parents’ bedroom and the daughters’ bedroom.
A loft has been designed and renovated to increase the living space for this family, which becomes the daughter’s bedroom. The crowded old bedroom has become a small but nice living room. This happy family is looking forward the future with a fresh start.
