USG Boral Partners with Habitat for Humanity to Help Families Build Better Lives

A safe, healthy and decent home is the foundation of life for every family. In Shanghai, Habitat for Humanity China provides technical and financial support to families with urgent housing needs to improve their living conditions through Renovation Support Project.

Partnered with Habitat for Humanity International, USG Boral will provide cash and in-kind donation of premium building materials to support the construction and restoration of homes for low-income families in Asia-Pacific. The partnership covers 11 countries including China, Australia, Indonesia and Singapore. This partnership also underscores USG Boral’s commitment to improve the lives of the communities, especially the low-income and less privileged, by addressing their housing needs.

Kitchen: before & after

On June 2nd, 11 employees from USG Boral participated Habitat China’s Shanghai Renovation Support Project and helped home partner Ms. Jiang clean her newly renovated home. Ms. Jiang is 57 years old this year and she has a child with innate disability, living on her monthly retiring pension and her son’s disability pension. The family has been living here for more than 30 years and some facilities have been worn out.

Due to the high floor height, the faint light from the ceiling could not light up the whole room. In this dark kitchen, Ms. Jiang had to be extremely cautious while cooking, because dangers might occur at any time. What’s worse, the walls in the kitchen were not tiled, so that oil and dirt that covers on the walls were too difficult for her to clean.

What troubled Ms. Jiang most was the issue lies in the bathroom. The bathroom was not properly designed when the family firstly moved into the flat. There was no heating system in the bathroom making it very cold to take a shower in the winter.

Toilet: before & after

Facing this situation, Ms. Jiang longed to improve the living condition for her family, but she has to take care of her son and it was difficult for her to afford the full cost of renovation. Early this year, Ms. Jiang applied to become a home partner of Habitat China’s Shanghai Renovation Support Project. And with support from USG Boral, Ms. Jiang was able to renovate the kitchen and bathroom, as well as re-arrange the wires to reduce safety hazards.

USG Boral volunteers worked very hard in morning and Ms. Jiang’s home was clean and tidy after that. Ms. Jiang expressed her sincere thanks to USG Boral for the support and volunteers work as well as thanks for the help of Habitat for Humanity organization. She said without these helps she didn’t know when she and her son would have such a good house and clean and safe living environment.

Last year, USG Boral has also worked with Habitat China to support Rainbow Pen Child Development Center in Shanghai to renovate an activity center for children with autism by donating building materials.

For the second half of the year, Habitat China will continually serve more families in need through Shanghai Renovation Support Project to help them obtain a safe, healthy and decent living environment, a place they can call “home”.
