Youth Volunteers Paint Beautiful Mural as a Children’s Day Gift

Jiangyi Kindergarten

On Sunday the 2nd of June Habitat Shanghai hosted a group of 12 enthusiastic volunteers from The SMIC Private school. The volunteers were set the task to design and paint murals on the three main walls of the migrant school. The volunteers fundraised beforehand to pay for the equipment used on the day. They then collectively designed their own murals, and then got to work painting! Their hard work has totally transformed the school.

These volunteers form what is known as one of Habitat’s ‘Campus Chapters’. A campus chapter is a group of students who are passionate about helping people build better lives for themselves and are ready to take the next step to lead the change at their school to help fulfil Habitat’s mission.

This student-led, student-initiated organisation partnered with Habitat for Humanity to help aid the renovation project of the Jiangyi Kindergarten. The kindergarten is located in Jiangqiao Town, Jiading District, Shanghai. It was founded in 2011 and is composed of a two-floor building that consists of 10 classrooms and a library. In total there are 278 students that are currently enrolled, plus 15 teachers and 12 nursery governesses. Habitat China has previously worked with this school, having renovated some of the classrooms, building new walls, and replacing selected ceilings and floors. The volunteers from SMIC selected to dedicate their time on the weekend of Children’s Day – it was a fantastic time for the volunteers to be able to give back to the community and help renovate the school for the kindergarteners!

“We didn’t realise how much of a difference we could make in one day.” – Campus Chapter President Jessica

On the day

On the day, the volunteers arrived at 10am to begin their orientation. From this point, volunteers were tasked with painting a large mural that occupied 2 entire walls of the school. The volunteers split up into 3 well organized teams. With visual aids provided by Habitat, and with the direction of the teacher, the three teams began stenciling on their masterpieces, before finally applying the paint. After taking a break for lunchtime, work continued well into the afternoon. The teams successfully managed to paint all three walls with beautiful designs, and then the certification ceremony was held at around 3.30pm.

The work completed by the Campus Chapter volunteers has made a huge impact on the school. The new paint work has totally transformed the schools exterior, making it a nicer environment to learn in. The Campus Chapter volunteers donated their time and energy into fundraising for the supplies that were used on the day. They wanted to help the children that are disadvantaged through engaging with the community and actively trying to improve the conditions of the school. The work does not stop here. Habitat for Humanity China, together with other partners like campus chapters and other volunteers, will keep this meaningful project going to build a brighter and safer future for the migrant children.
